Cooking with Essential Oils - Fennel

Fresh fennel is one of my favorite ingredients to cook with, because of its unique and delicate flavor - though not many will share this affection because of its signature black licorice flavor. With fresh fennel, though, its flavor is quite mild and the texture provides a nice crunch, similar to that of celery.

The essential oil distilled from the sweet fennel plant is strong in black licorice flavor, which is perfect for recipes calling for anise extract. Enjoy its purifying and strengthening properties when added to fresh juice. Just a drop is all you need - a little always goes a long with essential oils.

Added to a salad dressing or marinade, or infused into baked goods - this oil is a great one to have on hand for both cooking and for use in your natural solutions toolbox!

Fennel is most often used as a digestive aid and helps to curb hunger. It can reduce nausea, colic, and gas as well as support menstrual issues, PMS, menopause, and pre-menopause issues. Fennel is also helpful when breast feeding or to increase milk supply. Combine with grapefruit essential oil to aid in edema and fluid retention. Apply diluted to the chest and throat to help with coughs and congestion. Take internally with lemon in a capsule for intestinal parasites and sluggish bowels. Support blood sugar imbalance or hunger pains by adding fennel essential oil to a glass of water.

When used in supporting the emotions, go from unproductive to flourishing as fennel is the oil of responsibility. This powerful oil supports the person who has a weakened sense of self. These individuals may feel defeated by life's responsibilities, having little or no desire to improve their situation. Fennel encourages the soul to take ownership and reignites a passion for life. It encourages people to live in integrity with themselves, despite the judgment of others.

Fennel supports individuals in listening to the subtle messages of the body, which is especially important in situations where there has been a loss of connection to the body's natural signals due to emotional eating, severe dieting, or other eating issues. Fennel curbs cravings for experiences that dull the senses and aids in an individual's ability to hear the body signals of hunger, thirst, satiation, or exhaustion.
